Joe
My grandfather enlisted in the US army before he was eighteen and was sent to the region to catch Pancho Villa. I used family descriptions of his "blarney", toughness, and compulsions to create the fictional character in Newark Confessions.
Martha
My grandmother had a quick wit. She was said to be the life of the party and a wonderful mother. Here pictured with Russell behind her, Gladys and Joel in front.

I estimate this picture to be taken in 1925. Judging by their clothes, these were better times for the family.
